Can A Video Game Make You Into An Elite Race Driver?

iRacing is an extremely realistic racing simulator. Its top driver won $US10,000, despite never driving over 100 mph in real life. Top Gear put him in an open-wheel racer to see if digital skills translate to real racing prowess.

It was lots closer than you might expect. Racing in a Star Mazda, the driver, a 30-year-old Finn by the name of Greger Huttu (pictured), clocked in a lap time three seconds off of what an experienced driver would be expected to deliver. Three seconds is an eternity in motorsports, but consider this was the very first time he’d ever sat in the cockpit of a racer.

Top Gear’s telemetry confirmed Huttu’s racing acumen: “His braking points are spot on. He’s firm and precise on the throttle. And in the fastest corner, he’s entering at 100mph compared to an experienced driver’s 110 – a sign of absolute confidence and natural feel for grip,” Top Gear wrote.

The piece also gives insight into the physical demands of F1 racing. Huttu’s a bit pudgy and his head feels like it weighs a ton as he whips through the high G-force turns. Huttu barfs inside his helmet, takes some motion sickness pills and gets back to the track, but after 15 laps is utterly exhausted. It’s fascinating to consider that the biggest barrier to Huttu being an elite racer is the sport’s physical demands, rather than its tactical ones.

“It might be a bit late for 30-year-old Greger to get into perfect physcial shape, but for all the younger dreamers out there, our advice is simple,” Top Gear writes. “Sit yourself at a PC, load up iRacing and give it a go – you could have some of the magic stuff too. And if you do, be sure to join a gym. Quickly.”

Australian Summer of Cricket 2010/2011

Our fearless leader, el Tooly. Posted up the dates of the upcoming cricket season, including their venues. I haven’t posted the Sri Lanka matches, because we’d like to forget about them, and it was a fairly piss poor effort to be honest. But look below if you feel the need for a few beers, escape from the missus and want to watch some cricket. I’d say most matches will be telecast live and also streamed on the internet in various places as well.

Activision claims biggest entertainment launch ever with $360m Call of Duty: Black Ops haul

CALL of Duty: Black Ops shattered entertainment records this week when it raked in $360 million in its first 24 hours on sale.
The video game’s publisher Activision said the figures made Black Ops the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever, eclipsing Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters – even Avatar.
Avatar took 15 years to make and reportedly cost more than $500m, including promotional costs. It took $27 million on its opening day and $77 million for its opening weekend.
Hollywood’s best opening day effort belongs to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which took in $US72.7 million dollars a year ago, according to Hollywood.com.
Even the most production heavy video games – such as RockStar’s Red Dead Redemption – are made for under $100m.
Taking into account that new video games cost around $60, as opposed to $15 for a movie ticket, Black Ops’ opening day still puts it well ahead of New Moon in terms of audience reach.
Black Ops’ opening day effort broke Activision’s own record previously held by its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which took $US310 million on its first day a year ago.
It sold 5.6 million copies in North America and Britain alone on its first day compared to 4.7 million copies for Modern Warfare 2.
“There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $US550 million,” Activision Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick said.
“The Call of Duty franchise has over 25 million players around the world that are engaged in billions of hours of online gameplay.”
Black Ops is the seventh title in a franchise that has won a devoted following since the first version was released in 2003.
The latest instalment takes gamers on a series of Cold War-era military adventures.
It has generated a massive amount of pre-launch publicity after confirming rumours of appearances by zombie Nazis and Cold war personalities such as JFK, Fidel Castro and Richard Nixon.
Yesterday, Cuban authorities complained that a mission in which gamers were tasked with assassinating Castro was “perverse”.
Marketing firm IDC forecasts that 11.7 million copies of Black Ops will be shifted in the United States alone by the end of the year.
